Playing, Swimming, and Horseback Riding to Promote Healing at Casa Alianza Honduras

Honduras, May 2012

As with all the Casa Alianza sites, we work hard here in Honduras to help each child we care for deal with his or her emotional, physical and psychological burdens, working with them to build a positive outlook on life, and to start preparing for a brighter future.

Among our main tools are sports, recreation, arts and culture. Last month we combined them all as we headed off with 100 kids and eight staff members to Parque Aurora, a recreational center just outside of Tegucigalpa.

Upon arrival, a number of boys and girls played in a soccer tournament while others relaxed and explored the surroundings. We then made sure everybody could visit the park’s zoo, take a trip on horseback around the grounds, and dip in the swimming pool.

Such normal childhood outings are vital in the healing process provided by Casa Alianza. First and foremost, they give kids the opportunity to experience healthy and fun activities that they never could have done in their previous lives. They also help reduce stress and tension in the kids, help keep them from craving harmful substances, and provide stimulation for mental and physical growth.

It is never easy for the kids we care for to overcome the enormous difficulties they have faced, but with activities such as these, step by step, we can really help children and teens find their balance once again, feel happy and confident, and become part of a fun, caring and loving community.
