Walking in Light and Hope: Casa Alianza Mexico holds annual Candlelight Vigil

Each year, Casa Alianza Mexico organizes a very special and very symbolic candlelit walk along the streets of Mexico City. It is a beautiful event in which members of Mexican society join together with the Casa Alianza community, walking in solidarity and support of the many children and teens who have suffered abuse, neglect and violence.

The event begins in the morning, when people walking along the Paseo de la Reforma, one of the main avenues in downtown Mexico City, are encouraged to add pesos to a line of coins that stretches a great distance, forming a 'Covenant Chain' designed to support Mexico's children and teens in need.

As evening falls, children and adults gather on the streets of the city to participate in a candlelight march, celebrating of the work and dedication of the extraordinary young people who have left the streets in search of support and in the hope of a better future. At the same time, the walk also expresses our outrage at the abuses and violence suffered by so many children, expressing our hope that prejudice and discrimination will cease to exist, in particular the use of the stigmatizing expression ‘street children.’ As the event comes to a close, we pay our respects to the children and teenagers who have tragically died alone and anonymously, never knowing that there were people who cared.

This candlelit walk in solidarity with homeless children and teens is carried out in November in various cities around Mexico and at all of the Covenant House sites in the United States and Canada. These vigils help keep alight the flame of hope that leads children and teens to Casa Alianza, where they can find an opportunity to make a new start in life.

Everyone is invited to this beautiful event joining us in the hope of illuminating the lives of homeless children in our country and around the world.
